Service, Tourism and Retail is a 12 week program designed to prepare students with transferable service skills that will enable them to be successful in the tourism and retail industries. Customer service is extremely important to success in tourism and retail, and tourism employs people in a variety of service and retail jobs. Students will learn the importance of understanding tourism and retail in the local and global economy. The STAR program teaches a number of essential employability skills required in the tourism and retail industry. The first component is nine weeks of Tourism Essential Training, Retail Associate Training, life Skills, Employability Skills and training for certificates. Students will acquire a vocabulary for the world of work as well as build skills in consumer math, literacy, computers, personal wellness and job safety. Certificates: Tourism Essentials, Service Best, Retail Sales Associate Certificate (emerit recognized) Food Safe, Alcohol Service, First Aid. The second component is a 3 week supervised work placement which provides hands on training. Entrance Assessment CAAT B, stanine of 4 on each of the following: Reading/Comprehension, Vocabulary, Number Operations, Total Math.
