The Optimist Club of Calgary has been active in the Calgary area since 1938, as part of Optimist International, a volunteer organization that values all youth and helps them develop to their full potential. The Optimist Club William J. Cummer Scholarship was established in 2008 in recognition of the 70th anniversary of the Optimist Club of Calgary and long-standing member, William J. Cummer, for his service and contributions to the Club. William joined the Optimist Club of Calgary in 1956 and was a member for over 55 years until his death in 2013. William also helped charter many Optimist Clubs in Alberta.
One award at approximately $2,500, applied directly to tuition. Additional smaller awards may be available.
Applicant must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and Alberta resident.
- Be enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
- Be entering final year of study in first undergraduate certificate, degree or diploma program.
- Demonstrate volunteerism, service to youth, and leadership.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Demonstrate good academic standing (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 2.7 or 70%).
- Provide one letter of reference.
- Preference will be given to students from the Calgary area.
