The High School Apprenticeship Scholarship recognizes Alberta high school students who complete the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) or a Career and Technology Studies (CTS) apprenticeship pathway. The program aims to encourage students to pursue trades education as a route to stable, well-paid employment and to help address future labour market needs. Eligibility and selection are based on defined criteria rather than a submitted application.

How to apply

Students do not submit a traditional application; instead, eligible students must consent to be considered. Consent and eligibility are verified through the province’s student/apprentice records. Recipients are contacted if they meet the scholarship requirements.

Application Process: If you consent to be considered and meet the eligibility criteria, you may be selected; no separate application is required.

Application Timeline: Recipients will be notified by November of each year if they have met the scholarship requirements, and apprentices must keep their MyTradesecrets profile current, including mailing address.

Eligibility

Eligibility is based on citizenship/residency status, Alberta residency, high school completion timing, and participation in RAP or CTS apprenticeship pathways. Prior recipients of the RAP/CTS scholarship are not eligible to receive the same scholarship again. Separate award tiers exist with distinct requirements for the standard and Bright Futures scholarships.

To qualify for the High School Apprenticeship Scholarship ($1,000):

• be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person (Visa students are not eligible);
• be an Alberta resident as defined by the address on file in MyTradesecrets;
• complete the requirements for a high school diploma in June of their graduating year;
• be registered as an apprentice and earning high school credits in the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) OR be registered as an apprentice and have successfully completed a Career and Technology Studies (CTS) apprenticeship pathway through an Alberta high school;
• not be a previous RAP/CTS Scholarship recipient.

To qualify for the High School Apprenticeship Scholarship - Bright Futures ($2,000):

• meet all of the above requirements; and
• be registered as an Alberta apprentice in the Registered Apprenticeship Program with RAP credits AND have also successfully completed a CTS Apprenticeship Pathway at an Alberta high school.

• Citizenship or protected status and Alberta residency are mandatory.
• Must complete high school diploma requirements in the graduation year.
• Bright Futures requires both RAP registration with credits and a completed CTS apprenticeship pathway.
