What you need to get in to the Accounting/ Computer Applications at Portage College?
This 35-week program prepares students for immediate employment in entry-level accounting positions in government, business, and industry. Students will learn the most current software applications used in the workplace, including extensive training in Microsoft Office Suite. Training is provided in manual and computerized accounting, communications and financial math. Instruction in accounting projects and basic management principles are emphasized along with the development of basic office skills in reception duties, filing, and handling of mail. A three-week practicum allows students to apply their knowledge working for a local business while gaining valuable on-the-job training and experience for their resume. Entrance Requirements: Grade 11 with credit in English 20, 20-1, 20-2 or 23, Math 20 (Applied or Pure) or Math 23 or Successful completion of basic skills admission test (Nelson Denny and Business Math). Career Potential: Graduates of the program will be able to perform entry-level functions in accounting or administration in business, industry and government. Job titles include Accounts Receivable/Payable Clerk, Bookkeeper, Accounting Technician, and Accounting Clerk. Graduates have been hired in the tourism industry, health, education and social services fields, band or settlement offices, retail businesses, and oil and gas industries. Transferability: Courses are accepted by the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB) within the CIB professional development program.
