Entrance Requirements: Have at least Alberta Grade 10 (with a pass mark of 65% in Mathematics 10 or 13 or Pure or Applied Math 10, Science 10, and English 10-2 or English 13) or equivalent, or pass the Trades Entrance Exam (4). Career Potential: Steamfitter-pipefitters are employed by pipeline construction contractors and sub-contractors, thermal or steam generating plants, manufacturers, utility companies, oil refineries, gas plants, pulp mills and chemical plants. Employment prospects change with the seasonal and economic climates. Experienced steamfitter?pipefitters may advance to supervisory positions such as foreman, sub-contractor, contractor and construction superintendent. Transferability: Students who complete this program will have the opportunity to challenge the First Period Apprenticeship Exam. If successful, they are granted credit for the first period technical training, a minimum of 450 hours, up to 500 hours with an employer's recommendation towards their first year time requirements. The Pre-Employment Steamfitter-Pipefitter program is 16 weeks in length and is designed to provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience to students who are interested in obtaining employment in the steamfitter-pipefitter field. The Steamfitter-Pipefitter program will include the first period apprenticeship technical training as well as industrial safety, employability skills and computer training for trades.
