What you need to get in to the Pre-Employment Welding at Portage College?
The Pre-employment Welding program is 16 weeks in length and is designed to provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience to students who are interested in obtaining employment in the welding field. The Competency Based Apprenticeship Training (CBAT) system provides students with the opportunity to accelerate their learning by taking into account previously learned skills and knowledge, and allowing them to progress at their own pace. This allows the student to concentrate on skills they require. All students are required to take or demonstrate competency in the core skill based courses, but they are free to choose from optional employability enhancement components. These courses may be taken depending on the individual needs of the student and include training in computers. WHIMS, First-Aid and other courses which may increase a student's skills and marketability. The program also offers a Job Search component to give students the tools needed to find employment. Entrance Requirements: Recommend grade 9 or successful Trades Entrance Exam 2 results, or completion of AF3/Trades Readiness is also accepted. (High School Grade 12 recommended by industry). No assessment is required if student has 60% or more in Math 10/23 or Math 10 Applied or Pure and English 10/13 or English 10-1 or 10-2, or Trades Entrance Exam (TEE). Without a TEE, the student must write: CAAT Level C (omit Spelling and Language) Emphasis on Math, Science and Reading Comprehension **Minimum Stanine of 4 in all areas** Learner recruitment will focus primarily on those individuals meeting the entrance requirements for the trade; however, it will also be open to those individuals requiring additional academic skills in order to meet these entrance requirements. Entry into the program will be based on academic and aptitude assessment through testing and interview. Entrance is on a case by case basis. Entrance testing will be used to fine tune the program to the needs of the learners on a group and individual level. Participants will write the first period apprenticeship exam as required by AIT. Transferability: Students who complete this program will have the opportunity to challenge the First Period Apprenticeship Exam. If successful, they are granted credit for the First Period technical training, a minimum of 450 hours and up to 520 hours with an employer's recommendation towards their First Year time requirements. Career Potential: Upon successful completion of the Portage College program, students will be given the opportunity to challenge the First Year Apprenticeship Welder exam. This will give the individual an opportunity to work in industry as an apprentice welder, welder's helper or in other jobs related to the welding industry.
