What you need to get in to the Emergency Medical Responder at Portage College?
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) program is designed to provide entry level pre-hospital training for individuals wishing to start a career in emergency medical services (EMS). The format of the Portage College EMR program offers individuals a unique alternative to traditional full-time on-campus programs by providing multi-modal instruction in a computer-mediated delivery format so students can remain in their home communities for the majority of the training period. Students attend a 3 day (Friday-Sunday) on-site orientation followed by 3 weeks of online learning. Students then return to campus for 5 days (Monday-Friday) to complete the training. The program includes training in pharmacology, glucometric testing, MCI management, traction splints, NPA and pulse oximetry as per the Alberta Occupational Competency Profile. Under the Alberta Ambulance Services Act, registration as an EMR is the minimum level of training required to work on an ambulance. Graduates of the program receive EMR certification as well as Advanced First Aid certification. Entrance Requirements: Current CPR Certificate (Level C) issued within six months of course start date and Standard First Aid Certificate issued within one year of course start date. Minimum age 17 years old Basic computer skills. Minimum Hardware Requirements: Pentium class platform with Windows 98 Power PC MacOS System 7, or any later version Modem (28,800 or 33,600 bit/min.) or direct connection to the Internet Software Requirements: MS Word 2002 for the Mac, or MS Word 2002 (or later version) for Windows Internet connection with Netscape version 8.0 or greater, Explorer 6.0 or greater, or Mozilla Firefox 1.5.
