What you need to get in to the Health Care Aide at Portage College?
The Health Care Aide program is an entry level program which trains individuals to provide quality nursing assistance in many health care environments including hospitals, continuing and community care facilities, and other settings. As a Health Care Aide, you will become an essential part of the health care team and help clients with daily living activities, assist with assessments and prescribed medical treatments, and create a safe, caring and comfortable environment for patients. The Portage College program delivers the Government of Alberta Health Care Aid curriculum. The program is designed as a blended model of delivery which includes: 16 weeks of paced independent study and online instruction; 5 weeks of on-site lab and clinical instruction; a 4 week preceptor led practicum in a health care setting. Students may apply to receive credit for related experience by accessing the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Process. Educational: successful completion of Grade 10 including-English 10 or equivalent and Applied Math or equivalent (as determined by standardized test of educational institution). Documents: Current CPR will be provided in the program and is a requirement prior to clinical practice. Other: 18 year of age or older, Up to date immunizations (one-step mantoux (TB); Hepatitis B) or in progress. Clear criminal record check is required prior to clinical placement. Criminal record check waiver form. Students are responsible for own transportation to practicum placement. Official statement of good mental and physical health. Candidates may be asked for an admissions interview or may be required to write an admissions test. Computer Requirements: 1. Access to a computer with CD ROM, printer, and Internet access. 2. Basic Hardware Requirements: Pentium class platform with Windows NT or XP 3. Basic Software Requirements: MS Word; Anti Virus Software 4. Basic knowledge of word processing, file management, email, and Internet navigation. Graduates will be qualified to work in a variety of health care settings including: hospitals, long-term facilities, doctors offices and clinics, home care, assisted living centers, hospices and group homes, private care.
